Priest Pension Fund

Priest Pension Fund

I would like to take a few moments of your time to talk about our retired priests. There are approximately 50 retired priests in our diocese. They typically served in parishes across Southwestern Ontario for many decades. They gave us care as spiritual leaders in our communities, they were our guides, in many cases they were mentors and friends.

Most of us here today have stories to share about a priest who has left a lasting impression on us. When a priest is ordained, he literally lays down before the altar as a sign of giving his life to God and His faithful. A priest is called by God to serve the people and proclaim the Word of God. Priests are human beings and most retire 70, health permitting. Most priests set aside a portion of their salary for retirement, but because of their modest income these savings may not be enough. Beginning in 2014, parishioners across the diocese have bolstered the Pension Fund by making an annual donation.

I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the impact a priest has made in our lives. Please read the brochure included in this weekend’s bulletin, and chose to support our retired priests with your donation as well as your prayers. Together, we can help take care of our retired priests for many years to come.

Thank you and God Bless.
