Le Cimetiere Paroissial
St. Joachim Cemetery

When you approach the village of St. Joachim from the east on Hwy 2, after you see the church steeple from quite a distance you will see the village cemetery. At the centre is an imposing statue referred to as "le calvaire" or Calvary erected by Fr. Charles
Laliberte in 1916. According to Fr. Joseph Emery it was on the 15th of Feb. 1883 when Fr. Lorion purchased three acres of land , Bloc B on the village plan adjacent to the property already purchased (Bloc A) for a cemetery. The first burial was on the 15 of March 1882, just 10 days after the first mass was said. In 1940, the parish purchased 1.3 acres of land from Jean Baptiste Leboeuf . Around 1981 the cemetery was again enlarged with the purchase of 1.6 acres from Adrien Leboeuf, son of Jean Baptiste. In 1994 the Knights of Columbus (council 11256) built a chapel with a generous donation given by the family of the late Edgar Moison. In December of 2004 a dusk to dawn light was installed at the foot of the crucifix.
